God With Us #1: A Penny on the Floor

God is everywhere, always. So far on our journey, we have experienced (and will undoubtedly continue to experience) an abundance of little reminders that God is present in our lives. We want to document the special times and different ways He has helped us and reminded us to keep the faith along the way. Periodically, but in no particular order, I will share these sweet stories. We’d love for you to share your God stories with us in return! It’s amazing all the ways we can recognize Him in our daily lives, if we just pay attention :)

Back in April of 2023, our whole family traveled across the country from northern Colorado to eastern Alabama with the hopes of purchasing our rig. We hit a number of obstacles along the way, including a busted brake caliper, rejections on financing, and communication issues with the dealership.

We expected to make the purchase on a Friday and head home after a short visit with family in the general area. Instead, we were faced with 3 unexpected nights in hotels and a very long weekend of waiting, uncertainty, and frustration. We didn’t budget for this (or for the truck troubles earlier in our trip), so our accommodations were less than charming, to say the least.

By our 3rd night, as we were attempting to rest in the dirtiest digs in the state (a 1/2-star roach motel with tar on the bedsheets and a falling-in shower), with our hopes dashed and our future looking quite foggy, Justin decided to make a trip to the local Walmart for clean towels and blankets. On his way out the door, he let me know he was bringing his last $29 cash with him.

As he talked on the phone and guessed at the items we’d need, Justin slowly made his way through the store and eventually to the self check out. He rang up the items and stared at the total: $29.01. Just as he was contemplating what to give up, he glanced over and saw a penny on the floor. No joke. He showed me the receipt when he got back.

Now, to some casual observers, this may seem like an ordinary occurrence and a common coincidence. While it certainly could be explained away as such, it just so happened to be the very piece of hope and acknowledgement from above that we needed in that moment; a tiny reminder that He was still in our midst and for our good, despite our dismal circumstances.
